About Us

We believe the individual impact of football players cannot be measured by vanity metrics like goals, passes, tackles won or possession. Real team players influence besides their own metrics especially their team members, their opponents and as a final output the game result directly and indirectly. This is what Football GAP is about.

Game Review

In a surprising turn of events, Werder Bremen secured a commanding 4-1 victory over Union Berlin in their Bundesliga clash on Sunday, 8 March 2026. This result was unexpected given Union Berlin's home advantage, but Werder Bremen's clinical finishing and tactical discipline turned the tide in their favor. The match began with Union Berlin taking an early lead through Derrick Köhn's goal in the 18th minute. However, the game took a dramatic turn when Union Berlin's András Schäfer received a red card just a minute later, leaving the home side with ten men for the majority of the match. This incident proved pivotal as Werder Bremen capitalized on their numerical advantage. Werder Bremen equalized in the 31st minute through Olivier Deman, setting the stage for a dominant performance. Jens Stage put Bremen ahead in the 36th minute, and Marco Grüll extended their lead in the 66th minute. Patrice Čović sealed the victory with a goal in the 90th minute, capping off a comprehensive performance by the visitors. Tactically, Werder Bremen's ability to exploit the extra space created by the red card was crucial. Their midfield, led by Jens Stage, controlled the tempo and created numerous opportunities. Union Berlin, despite their early promise, struggled to cope with the numerical disadvantage and were unable to mount a significant comeback. Both teams made several substitutions, with Union Berlin introducing Oliver Burke, Christopher Trimmel, Jeong Woo-yeong, and Tim Skarke in an attempt to inject fresh energy into the side. Werder Bremen's substitutions, including Julián Malatini and Patrice Čović, helped maintain their momentum and secure the win. This victory propels Werder Bremen up the Bundesliga table, providing them with a much-needed boost in confidence. For Union Berlin, the defeat is a setback, and they will need to regroup quickly to avoid slipping further down the standings. The result highlights the importance of discipline and the impact a single red card can have on the outcome of a match.

What is GAP?

What is Plus Minus Goals (G±)?

Plus Minus Goals (G±) is the average goal difference per game while the player was on the pitch. A value above 0 indicates that the team rather wins, a value below 0 means his team concedes more goals than they score when the player is on the pitch. As an example, if the player's team is winning 3:1 the goal difference is +2, if the player's team is loosing 0:1, the goal difference is -1. It is a pure metric which is barely adjusted for circumstances to purely show the goal difference.

What is GAP?

GAP (Game Advantage Percentage) shows the percentage gap between a player and the average league player. It answers the question: How much does a player improve or worsen a team's performance? It is based on high level game data with a focus on the impact on the goal difference (G±) from the last 50 games of a player. Besides that, GAP goes further and considers game context by involving data from the player and all other players who are at the same time on the pitch, no matter if teammates or opponents. Football GAP - the individual metric for team players.
